ASSURE II: Return of the Anxiety Factor

ASSURE II: Return of the Anxiety factor

Yes, I know that I should be familiarized with creating a lesson plan using the Assure Model. I also know that I should not be stressing out as before. Well, guess what? The anxiety factor is back again. It has a tendency to repeat its’ self just like a broken record player. Rather, a scratched CD. As I learned from the past assignment, anxiety can be a good motivator or just the opposite. Just as before, in order to help alleviate any stress or anxiety, planning is a must. The most important part I felt was to select the content for the lesson to be taught. We spent approximately two meetings in choosing and talking about our individual content areas. This helped me a great deal. After deciding on my content area everything started coming together.
In my case I am leaning towards anxiety being a motivator. Our second write up is on creating a lesson plan using the Assure Model as a guide and using two digital media tools to present the lesson plan to our students. The students in return have also to use two digital media tools in response to the lesson plan created. That sounds simple right. Remember the computer is a tool that I am still trying manipulate at will. It is getting easier the more I use it. The two digital media tools that I have initially chosen for this lesson plan are the use of a video presentation and the use of the blog. Why these two? I have used them in some capacity in class and it is in my comfort zone. However, I have never used any form of digital media to teach anything.
After today’s class (11-19-08) I decided to attempt creating a website as a tool to help teach. Why the change? Why move out of this comfort zone? Well after viewing the sample ASSURE lesson plan in class and how some of the plans were created by some students with little experience, I decided to give it a try. This is my first time in creating a website. I know it is not highly sophisticated. Guess what? I enjoyed creating the site. It was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Believe it or not I attained some kind of self-fulfillment in attempting this. “Students using technology experience increased self-esteem, and beliefs about their capabilities improve (O’Connor & Brie, 1994).”
Why use the blog to teach a lesson, if I was a teacher? The use of a blog allows me to communicate information to students. It is an easy way of giving and receiving information. The information is posted for all to see and read. Students likewise can post homework and ask pertinent information. It allows for group work outside of the classroom. A private group account can be created if a group desires. It is an easy tool to learn and use. My second digital media tool that I choose to use is video recording. This is an easy tool to use. The digital recording of the lesson and posting it on the blog site is similar to having a face to face class. The recording of a video and uploading it on a blog will also allow the students to review the lesson. The use of a website is me thinking outside of the box. All tools will allow a teacher to communicate with students frequently. The plan is to present a lesson using the media tools mentioned, without having a face to face class session. Basically I will post all videos and all PowerPoint Presentations via a blog for students to view.
I enjoyed the assignment. It forced me to utilize the tools I have been learning about in class. By using these tools my confidence level in using them for future projects has increased. The part of this assignment that I enjoyed the least was using a tool for the first time, the making of a website. I felt that if I wanted to teach a lesson to students, then I should have attained a certain level of mastery on the topic and mastery of presentation. It was time consuming, but it paid off. I learned with every step.
These tools remind me of the steps that the hospital in Guam is taking or will be taking. A lot have been said about the future of the Guam Memorial Hospital in the PDN lately. Physicians now have the technology to communicate in real time with other physicians around the world. This will only better our health care here. Digital communication is a must in education also. This will increase our standards and will better prepare our students for the future.
The NET*S which best applies to this particular assignment is standard “III, Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum: Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning (3A, 3B, 3C and 3D).” Technology is used to teach students and to support the student centered activity.

Asthma: Impact on school age children

Asthma Overview Lecture:

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the airways of a person’s lung.
Airways are tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs.
When an Asthmatic attack/episodes occurs the person’s airways start to swell and the tubes start to narrow. Along with the swelling and narrowing of the airways the mucus glands start to hyper secrete mucus in the airway.

Who can get Asthma?

Affects people of all ages and nationalities.
The greatest impact of Asthmatics is school age children.
Statistics show that 22 million people have Asthma and of these numbers there are 8 million children affected.
Asthma is not a contagious disease.
Genes and environmental factors play vital roles when a person is diagnosed to be an Asthmatic.
The exact cause is unknown.

The vicious cycle of having an Asthmatic attack:
Genes and environmental are key factors. A positive family history may exhibit that Asthma runs in the family.
The environmental factor also plays a vital role. These factors are allergens (dust, animal hair, smoke…) that can cause an Asthmatic person the start to react to the allergen by narrowing, swelling and an increase of mucus secretions in the airways.
This hyper response will cause a person to start to cough and wheeze.
The response may be mild or severe.
I untreated the person may start to experience a state being deprived of oxygen.
Ultimately if uncorrected…..death may occur.

How Asthma affects our school age children:

The Cost of Asthma
In U.S. Children
Lost School Days
14 Million Days/Year

Asthma Treatment
$3.2 Billion/Year

Hospitalization
3rd Leading Cause
Among Children
Under 15 Years Old

Asthma can be debilitating. However if we educate ourselves it can be controlled.

Video Reflection: Assistive Technology

Title: Video Reflection: Assistive Technology

Robert J. Sales, ED 451, UOG

The short video: Assistive Technology: Enabling Dreams brings into light the importance of having Assistive Technology available in today’s classroom settings. AT, short for Assistive Technology plays a significant role in the lives of people with disabilities. So what is Assistive Technology? By definition, it is “any device which may be used by anyone with a disability or without; Assistive Technology (AT) enables individuals to be independent and allows them to perform various tasks which they otherwise would not be able to accomplish without any assistance.”
Independent: I define this as the ability to make choices, to be self-sufficient in one’s life. The video shows how AT gives the abilities of being independent to people that are disabled. They are able to independently move about on their own with minimal assistance. There is greater independent communication with their peers and instructors. Without AT in their lives they would require greater assistance from others. I believe as we start to mature in life, the need for being independent increases. It is part of our life growth. Through Assistive-Technology we are able to accomplish this.
Another important aspect which AT plays a role in is the ability to perform various tasks which otherwise would be difficult or near impossible to perform. The people with disabilities shown on the video are doing things which none physically challenge individuals are capable of doing without assistance. For example the simple task of moving around, for those of us without any disability this is a rather simple, without much thought, automatic action. However for people with certain disabilities this action is just the opposite. This is were AT comes into play. Individuals with disabilities are now able to move about, pick up certain things, communicate easily, go the school and succeed via AT.
In order for AT to be utilized to its’ full potential, training should be started as early as possible. The video contends that the sooner a person with a disability is introduced to AT he or she will be able to reach a level of mastery using AT earlier. This will allow them to focus on the content areas in school versus attempting to learn the subject matter and still becoming familiarized with the AT.

My Anxiety filled Experience with ASSURE

Running Head: MY ANXIETY FILLED EXPERIENCE

My Anxiety Filled Experience With ASSURE
ED451-3: Audio Visual Education, U.O.G.
Robert Sales

Abstract
My reflection paper will highlight my experience in developing a lesson plan using the ASSURE Model as a template and the use of the APA style of writing.

My Anxiety Filled Experience With ASSURE.

My experience in creating my lesson plan can be summed up into one word, anxiety. Anxiety is really not a bad word. For some it may be a strong and powerful motivator to finish work on time. For others, it can mean a complete shut down of all synaptic activity in the brain. According to Eggen and Kauchak (2004), “The relationship between anxiety, motivation, and achievement is curvilinear; some is good, but too much can be damaging.”
In my case I experienced both. I was about to throw in the towel and just pay up my tuition fee upon dropping the class. I promise myself that I will take the class next semester. Now that I remember, I have been telling myself that a couple of semesters ago. Having remembered my promise, I realized that I was just procrastinating. Guess what, the use of computers is not my strong point, duh! It finally dawned on me that I had to finish the class and besides the dead line for receiving a full refund passed.
So with this realization I set out to finish what I have started on the first day of class, to stay, finish and to learn as much as I can from this class. It’s funny, my partner Anxiety wanted to hang out with me. In the end I realized that my anxiety primarily is the result of my procrastination or my reluctance to learn something new, using the computer as a tool.
In writing this lesson plan I learned that the computer is a valuable tool to have. My main experience in computers was mainly centered on Yahoo or YouTube. To complete both of the assignment; the ASSURE Lesson Plan and Reflection papers I had to use the computers more as a tool, other than accessing only Yahoo or YouTube. Some of the tools I was able to use were; Excel, Word, the other search engines, etc.…
Lesson Planning requires previous knowledge. Since I did not have a strong background in creating lesson plans, the next best step was using the computer to access information and direction. The computer gave vast information on lesson planning, specifically ASSURE Lesson Planning. This first assignment forced me to finally start using various functions available. I found myself using and/or trying to figure out Excel and Word in these activities. It really made my work easier. As I continued to working on my ASSURE lesson plan I started to see the value of it. The ASSURE Model in lesson planning is a quick, concise reference guide.
The ASSURE Model is a simple guide which every teacher can follow. It covers all the pertinent sections so one can teach effectively. This will help take the guess work out of what is to be taught in the classroom. Most important, the model can be used as a guide immediately by anyone who takes over a class, in this case a substitute teacher. It is a great blueprint that is easy to follow. The model can easily be modified should the need arise.
In starting the second assignment, again my inexperience in APA style of writing directed me towards the use of the computer for more information. I liked that I was able to figure out some application using Excel and Word. I enjoyed it. Likewise, the least enjoyable part was also trying to figure things out. It seems to be a love, hate relationship for now. My partner Anxiety is there whenever I would start my work but seems to fade away the longer I am using the computer.
So with my new and ever developing skill (emphasis on new) with the computer the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T) which probably applies to me is, NETS*T learning objective, Technology Operations and Concepts section B: “demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.”
